One of the most popular and beautiful areas on the mainland across from Corfu are the Syvota group of islands, as well as the beautiful bays and beaches dotted around their coast.
Leaving Gouvia Marina with the sun shimmering on the sea we start cruising down, passing the small islands of Vidos, and Lazareto, before facing the breathtaking protector of the town of Corfu, the old fortress, on our port side.
Picking up speed slightly, we start to slightly pull away from the coastline, whilst still following it. We pass the stunning mouse island as we start to see the open waters ahead us. We start making our way diagonally across to the mainland, arriving at the popular Sivota in just over an hour.
The islands that make up Sivota are very close to the mainland and among them are to be found the unique and beautiful bays of “Diapori” and “Bella Vraka”. These bays are only accessible by boat. But first, a must stop is the stunning Blue Lagoon, where Arabian pirates are said to have moored their ships in the Middle Ages. Named “Pisina” bay, Greek for swimming pool, the waters in this magical spot is an electrical turquoise colour, making it ideal for some snorkeling and scootering around. Of course the gorgeous natural landscape makes it all the more majestic as you enjoy a refreshing beverage in the sun.
As we depart this pool like cove, we move on to the next bays, the one more beautiful than the next, adding a Caribbean feel to your day and making sure that you enjoy an experience to be treasured, be it swimming in the crystal clear and turquoise waters, or just lounging in the sun.
Also possible is a visit to the harbor town of Mourtos just round the corner on the mainland, where you can explore this lovely fishing village and perhaps enjoy some traditional lunch.
If you wish, we can head down along the picturesque coastline to Megali Ammos Beach,
Perfect to drop anchor in the deep waters, or we can explore the other hidden treasures in between the islands, such as “Zeri” bay and “Zavia”.
We cannot leave of course without visiting the historic caves on the west side of Mourtos island, the biggest of which is called “Giant Cave”, where during the Second World War Greek naval battle ships hid underneath the lighthouse there. As we admire the beauty of the naturally carved rock surrounded by greenery, we truly feel at peace before making our way back home in that late afternoon breeze.
As we approach the southeast corner of Corfu and travel up the coastline, it is the perfect time to enjoy the last glass of wine, just in time to make a toast in front of the old fortress, before coming back to base.
