In the path of Durrells with Us
As Gerald Durrell himself discovered all those years ago aboard the charmingly named Bootle Bumtrinket, there’s nothing quite like exploring the eastern coast of Corfu by boat. On the lovely pontoon boat, we leave the marina heading north, passing pebbled beaches and picturesque mountains dotted with villas.
We pass Kalami bay, where Gerald lived for 18 months with his wife, before reaching Kouloura, where the infamous poet and novelist wrote the enchanting “My Family and Other Animals” while living at a cypress-enclosed cove on the northeast coast.Share a glass of wine with the memory of the man admired by many, and enjoy a dip in the clear blue waters.
As we make our way down the coastline once more, we also get a glimpse of the main filming location of the much-cherished tv program “The Durrells” on the beach of Sotiriotisa, along with many other beautiful locations portrayed in Gerald Durrell’s book, as well as the show.
