A Slice of past & present

Come with us and discover the treasures of this beautiful island, whilst reminiscing in the stories that make Corfu’s history one of a kind.

Itinerary:

  • Corfu Donkey Rescue
  • Old Peritheia
  • Lawrence Durrells’ White House Kalami

Set off on this magical day of discovering the beauties hidden in the mountains of Corfu Island. Our first stop is sure to boost your oxytocin levels, the lovely Corfu Donkey Rescue. Donkeys are an integral part of the vision of Greek rural lifestyle, and go hoof in hand with the islands history. These beautiful and loving creatures were pivotal, for transportation of people and in agriculture, seasonally for the olive harvest, meaning they had to work very hard. Corfu Donkey Rescue, founded in 2004, has given the remaining donkeys of Corfu the loving and peaceful environment they deserve for their retirement.

Back on the road again you’ll continue to enjoy the Corfu scenery, before arriving at the out-of-this-world village of old Peritheia in Greek, which lies on the slopes of Mount Pantokrator on the astonishing North-East side of Corfu Island. This village is now a “Designated Area of Natural Beauty” and is now a preserved village and a representative example of Venetian architecture with houses made of stone. Old Perithia seems to remain indistinguishable over the course of time. Also, there are some tavernas in the area such as “Evdokia” or “Foros” that serve traditional dishes mainly made of Corfu’s local products, perfect for a bite to eat.

As we leave this picturesque village, we head on to another slice of history on the island, held very close to our hearts. To many people, Lawrence Durrell and his family is the most famous family associated with the island of Corfu, where they found paradise, literary inspiration, and lifelong friends. Gerald published the hugely popular ”My family and Other Animals”, while Lawrence wrote the literary gem, “Prospero’s Cell” based on his time on the island.

Today, all these years later, we have the honor of paying tribute to the place where the magical pieces of art came together, the home of Lawrence Durrell during his time on Corfu. Heading in to the tiny, peaceful hamlet of Kalami Bay,we visit the treasured White House“set like a dice on a rock already venerable with the scars of wind and water where Lawrence and Nancy lived and loved.

Setting off on this magical day, we make our way up to the natural beauty of Palaiokastritsa village. One of the island’s treasures, you’ll pass the gorgeous pebbled beaches filled with crystal clear waters, and natural caves dotted around the sea, before reaching the stunning views at the top along with a monastery dating back to 1225. As we take in the scenery we continue our journey, approaching the village of Lakones, for the perfect morning pitstop. Located just outside the village, the infamous “George’s Cellar”, a family business selling natural products with a wide variety of herbs, oil, fruit, honey and wine, all fresh from the generally unpolluted nature of Corfu.

Setting off again, maybe with a purchase or two under our hat, we make our way through the picturesque villages on the Northwest side of the island to our next stop, sure to awaken your tastebuds! The Diamantopoulos Nemea Wine Cellar, stemming once upon a time from a deep knowledge on cultivation of the owners’ fertile land on 250 acres of vineyards, in the Ancient Cleones and Gelini area in Nemea-Kiato Corinth, over a 100 years ago, now offers a staggering 14 variations of wine, distilled, stored and sold by them of course. The beautiful exhibition cellar will take your breath away, with a tasting experience from heaven.

As the afternoon sun is shining, we get on the road again, preparing for a lunch stop filled with a sophisticated interpretation of traditional Corfu Food. As we arrive at Oliva Ristorante, your table will be waiting for you, along with some savory flavors to indulge in. When lunch is done, and drinks are drunk, we embark once more to one last stop, perhaps the most significant to the island of them all. “Mavromatis Kumquat Distillery” was established in 1965, as a family-run business, specializing in distillery of special kumquat liqueurs and sweets. Known as the islands’ trademark, Kumquat is a small fruit that holds a great place in the hearts of all those who love Corfu. Exploring the true taste of this beautiful island, it is surely the best way to close off.
